CITIES NIGHT-TIME PLANNING COMES WITH COUNTLESS CHALLENGES

Night-time planning can be a non-stop challenge. For this reason, in Night-time Traveller we are adapting and creating didactic tools to contribute to the urban design of the night.

These tools are the result of collecting and analyzing data to continue learning about citizens needs.

In addition, we seek to keep up to date through other professionals’ work -designers, technicians and researchers- in this field and at the same time share their contribution.

CITIES
& SDGs

Night-time planning is a key subject in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For this reason, in NTT research process, we have focus on working through the lenses of three SDGs related to cities comprehensive sustainability:

Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities, Goal 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure, and Goal 5: Gender equality.

ABOUT
OUR GUIDELINE

In Night-time Traveller we are developing a methodology to approach Night-time Urban Planning from a socially-oriented approach.

We have synthesized this methodology in a Guideline called Light as a tool to structure Urban Planning. Our goal is that this guide will help people to become familiar with the available tools to tackle the planning and design process.

In Night-time Traveller, we have set ourselves the task of transforming complex knowledge into didactic tools to involve all stakeholders during the design process.

This guideline will be composed of three phases: (1) Main Dimensions, (2) Lighting Attributes, and (3) Lighting Systems.

The first phase, Main Dimensions in Urban Planning, is especially thought to involve citizens perspective into the design process.

For this reason, the design of the first phase of the guideline addresses the principles necessary to undertake night-time governance, visualize the needs of all stakeholders and convey the main needs to be satisfied with the urban project.

ABOUT
OUR TOOLS

In Night-time Traveller we understand that just using the guideline during the urban design process can be impractical. Because of this, we are creating a toolkit to address each one of the phases.

In addition, we are developing workshops to facilitate the design process using the toolkit and our experience to promote a participatory and constructive environment among stakeholders.

Our Cities Should Tell The Story Of Who Its Citizens Are, And Be A Collection Of Their Deepest Wishes

To summarize, In Night-time Traveller our aim is to facilitate the interaction between citizens and the stakeholders in night-time urban projects.

For this, we are developing three instruments: (1) a methodology explained through our guideline called light as a tool to structure urban planning; (2) a toolkit which translates our methodology into didactic tools so anyone can participate during the design process; and (3) workshops to facilitate each one of the urban proposal phases.
